01Care and services
What we do, who we do it for, and where home care ends and other kinds of care begin.
What is home care, and how is it different from a nursing home?
Home care is one-to-one support delivered in the place a person already lives, so they keep their own bed, their own kitchen and their own routine. A nursing home moves a person into a facility and shares staff across many residents. Highland Home Care sends a caregiver to the client, whether that home is a house in Overland Park, an apartment in Lenexa or a room in an assisted living community.
What services does Highland Home Care provide?
We provide four core services across Overland Park and Johnson County: personal care, nutrition and meal services, transportation and escort, and care coordination. Personal care covers bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility and hygiene. Nutrition and meal services cover preparation, feeding assistance and dietary support that meets a client's medical requirements. Transportation and escort covers arranged rides and accompaniment to medical appointments. Care coordination puts one person in the middle of the conversation between doctors, caregivers and family.
Do you support people who already live in assisted living?
Yes. Assisted living communities in Overland Park staff to an average, not to one person, so families often bring us in for the hours where their relative needs more attention than the community's ratio allows. That might be help through the morning routine, company at meals, or a companion for appointments outside the building. We coordinate with the community's own staff rather than working around them.
Do you provide skilled nursing or medical treatment?
Our caregivers provide non-medical personal care and support, not skilled nursing procedures such as wound care, injections or IV therapy. When a client needs clinical care, our care coordinators work alongside the home health agency, hospice or physician providing it, so the medical plan and the daily routine line up instead of competing. Call us on (913) 287-0333 and we will tell you plainly whether what you need is inside or outside what we do.
Can you care for someone with dementia or Alzheimer's disease?
Yes. Memory loss changes what a good day looks like, so we build the care plan around familiar routine, consistent faces and a pace that does not rush the person. Caregivers assigned to clients living with dementia are matched for temperament as well as skill, and we keep the same caregiver on the schedule wherever we can, because a new face every week undoes much of the good the care does.
Do you offer overnight, weekend or live-in care?
Yes. We schedule daytime visits, overnight cover, weekends and live-in arrangements, and most families use a mix as needs change. Some start with a few hours twice a week and add overnight cover after a hospital stay; others begin with round-the-clock support and step down as recovery goes on. Tell us the hours that are hardest and we will build the schedule from there.
02Where we work
The towns we cover in Johnson County and the greater Kansas City area.
Which cities and areas does Highland Home Care serve?
We serve Overland Park and the surrounding Johnson County communities, including Leawood, Lenexa, Olathe, Shawnee, Prairie Village, Merriam, Mission, Roeland Park and Gardner, along with the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. Our office is at 10131 W 84th Street, Overland Park, KS 66212. If you are just outside those lines, call (913) 287-0333 — we would rather tell you honestly than have you keep searching.
Can you start care when someone is discharged from hospital?
Yes, and discharge is one of the most common times families call us. The days immediately after a hospital stay carry the highest risk of a fall or a readmission, which is exactly when the household is least prepared. Call us as soon as a discharge date is being discussed, and we will work to have a caregiver in place for the first day home rather than the first week.
What are your office hours, and can I reach someone outside them?
Our office is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central. Care itself runs outside those hours — evenings, overnights and weekends — and scheduled clients have a number to call when something changes out of hours. For a new enquiry, call (913) 287-0333 during office hours or email highland.hckc@gmail.com any time and we will reply on the next business day.
03Getting started
What happens between your first call and your first caregiver visit.
How do I get started with home care?
Start with a phone call to (913) 287-0333 or a message through our contact form. We talk through what is happening at home, then arrange a free in-home consultation where we meet the person who needs care, look at the house itself, and write a care plan with the family. Only after that do we match a caregiver and agree a schedule. Nothing is signed at the consultation.
How quickly can care begin?
For most families, care begins within a few days of the consultation, and we can move faster in urgent situations such as a hospital discharge. The limiting factor is usually matching the right caregiver rather than paperwork. If the need is immediate, say so on the first call and we will tell you honestly what we can staff and when.
What happens at the in-home consultation?
A care coordinator visits the home, at no cost and with no obligation, and spends the time on three things: the person, the household and the plan. We ask about the daily routine, medical conditions, medications, mobility, diet, what the person enjoys and what they will not tolerate. We look at the home for hazards. Then we write a care plan that names the tasks, the hours and who does what, and we give you a copy.
Is there a minimum number of hours, or a long-term contract?
Schedules are agreed with each family rather than sold as fixed packages, and we do not ask families to sign long-term contracts to receive care. Hours can go up or down as circumstances change, which they usually do. We will confirm the specific minimum visit length and notice period for changes in writing before care begins, so nothing about the arrangement is a surprise.
What if the caregiver is not the right fit?
Tell us, and we will change the match. A caregiver can be perfectly competent and still be wrong for a particular household, and nobody is served by pretending otherwise. There is no awkwardness in asking and no cost for a reassignment — the relationship is the service, so if it is not working, neither are we.
04Our caregivers
Who comes into the home, and what stands behind them.
How do you screen and check your caregivers?
Every caregiver is interviewed in person, reference-checked and cleared through a criminal background check before being assigned to a client, and we verify the certifications a role requires rather than taking them on trust. Caregivers are our employees, not contractors we pass your details to, which means they are insured, supervised and accountable to us.
Will the same caregiver come every time?
We build schedules around consistency, so most clients see the same one or two caregivers week after week. Complete consistency is not always possible — people take holidays and fall ill — so we keep a familiar backup briefed on the care plan rather than sending a stranger. You will always know who is coming.
Who supervises the care once it starts?
A care coordinator owns the case and stays the family's point of contact after care begins. They check in with the client, keep the care plan current as needs change, and act as the connection between the doctors, the caregivers and the family, so no one has to relay information between three parties themselves.
How will I know what is happening if I live out of town?
Long-distance families are a large part of who we work with, and updates are built into the arrangement rather than something you have to chase. Your care coordinator agrees a check-in rhythm with you at the start — a call, an email summary, or contact whenever something changes — and you can reach them directly on (913) 287-0333 during office hours.
05Cost and payment
How pricing works and which payment sources are worth investigating.
How much does home care cost in Overland Park?
Cost depends on the hours, the level of care and the type of schedule, so we quote each family after the in-home consultation rather than publishing a single rate that would be wrong for most people. A few hours of companionship a week and overnight personal care are very different services. Call (913) 287-0333 and we will give you a clear written figure for the schedule you actually need, with no obligation.
Does insurance, Medicare or Medicaid pay for home care?
It depends on the payer and the service. Long-term care insurance policies frequently cover non-medical home care, and Veterans' benefits and Kansas Medicaid programmes may cover some in-home support for those who qualify. Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing non-medical personal care. We will help you work out which of these apply to your situation and what documentation each one asks for — call (913) 287-0333.
How does billing work?
You receive an itemised invoice covering the hours worked, so you can see what was delivered rather than a single unexplained total. Billing arrangements, frequency and accepted payment methods are confirmed in writing before care begins. If anything on an invoice does not look right, call the office and we will go through it with you.
06Practical questions
Website access, privacy, working with us, and the things people ask last.
Is this website accessible if I use a screen reader or keyboard only?
Yes. This site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 and WCAG 2.2 Level AA: full keyboard operability, visible focus indicators, semantic landmarks, text alternatives for meaningful images, contrast of at least 4.5:1 for body text, and motion that stops when your system asks for reduced motion. Our accessibility statement sets out our conformance status and known limitations, and tells you how to report a barrier. If the website is in your way, call (913) 287-0333 and we will handle your enquiry by phone instead.
What happens to the information I send through this website?
Information you send through the contact form or a job application is used to respond to you and is not sold. Our privacy policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it and how to ask us to delete it. If you would rather not put health details in a web form at all, call the office and give them to a person instead.
How do I apply for a caregiver job with Highland Home Care?
Open roles are listed on our careers page, where you can apply directly to a specific position or send a general application if nothing currently listed matches you. A resume is required with every application. You will receive an acknowledgement by email as soon as your application arrives, and our hiring team reviews every one personally.
How do I raise a concern or make a complaint?
Call the office on (913) 287-0333 or email highland.hckc@gmail.com and ask for the care coordinator handling your case. We would far rather hear about a small problem early than a large one late. Concerns are logged, and you will be told what we did about it rather than simply that it was noted.
Still have a question?
Every family’s situation is its own. If yours is not covered above, tell us what is happening at home and we will tell you plainly whether we can help — and if we cannot, who can.
